For the quarter ended Dec. 24, Lam Research said net income was $167.3 million, or $1.15 a share, up from $77.8 million, or 55 cents a share, in last year’s same period.
Sales rose 77% to $633.4 million from $358.2 million, boosted by demand for equipment to produce DRAM memory and NAND flash chips. The results topped Wall Street’s expectations.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call estimated Lam Research “We are gaining share in a broad based fashion across all regions and market segments,” Chief Executive Steve Newberry said in a conference call.
Still, investor pushed down Lam Research shares 8% in late trading, reflecting concern about postponed shipments of chip-equipment as manufacturers absorb a slew of new purchases over the past year. Fremont, Calif.-based Lam Research is one of the world’s top suppliers of machines that make memory chips used in personal computers and consumer-electronics devices.
It makes tools that etch circuits onto the silicon wafers on which computer chips are stamped. The company has benefited from increased demand for equipment that makes DRAM and NAND flash chips. Some of its customers include Samsung Electronics Co.
In 2006, electronics manufacturers, particularly memory-chipmakers, invested heavily in new chip-equipment. Global sales of semiconductor equipment rose 25% to $42.4 billion, according to Gartner Inc.’s preliminary forecast. Lam Research forecasted March quarter sales in the range of $635 million to $650 million and earnings per share between $1.03 and $1.07.
By comparison, analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call estimate sales of $633 million and earnings of $1.12 a share. On a down note, it said shipments will decline 5% to 10% from the prior quarter due to customer delays for equipment it’s ready to deliver.
Right now, the company is sitting on an unshipped backlog valued at $719 million. The chip-manufacturing market is going through a period of absorption. Approximately 35 chip factories are expected to start operation this year, according to market-researcher Strategic Marketing Associates.
CEO Newberry said one of Lam Research’s customers, which is building a plant in China, postponed a delivery because it was still waiting for an export license from the U.S. government. Another customer, he said, was affected by Sony Corp. more detail click on www.ddsellsprescott.com
